Trades

Trades is your log of share buys and sells. Each trade updates the holding in its portfolio, and each sale records its profit or loss as income.

Log a trade

  • Enter the portfolio, ticker, buy or sell, number of shares, price and date. Notes are optional.
  • The table lists Date, Type, Portfolio, Ticker, Shares, Price, Total and Notes. Filter it by portfolio.
  • You can create a new portfolio while logging a trade.
  • A buy adds to the holding at a weighted average cost, or creates the holding if there is none. A sale reduces it, and selling every share removes the holding.

What a sale does

When you log a sale, FinTarget adds an income entry under the Stock Market Trading type. The amount is the profit or loss against your average cost, which is the price minus your average cost, times the shares sold. The toast after saving shows the figure with a plus or minus sign.

BHP, 100 shares sold at 48.20 against an average cost of 40.00 records 820.00 of income.

Deleting a sale also removes the income entry it created.

The income entry is a simple profit or loss against average cost. It is not a capital gains tax calculation. It has no 12-month discount and no choice of parcel, so check your figures with your accountant.
