Portfolios and holdings
Portfolio is where your shares live. Create one portfolio per brokerage account or goal, add your holdings, and see live prices, gains and losses, sector mix and upcoming earnings dates.
What you'll need
- The ticker, number of shares and average cost for each holding.
- A portfolio for each exchange you hold. Supported exchanges are ASX, BSE, NSE, NYSE and NASDAQ, TSX, LSE, XETRA, and Euronext Paris and Amsterdam.
Add your holdings
ticker,shares,avg_cost. An import takes up to 500 rows in a file up to 500 KB. A ticker you already hold is added to the existing holding at a weighted average cost. Each ticker is checked against a live price before you confirm. What you see
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Shares and Avg Cost | MeaningWhat you entered. Editing a holding changes only these two. To change a ticker, delete the holding and add it again. |
| Live Price | MeaningThe latest available price. Prices can lag by a minute or two. |
| Market Value and Weight % | MeaningShares times live price, and its share of the portfolio. Until a price loads, FinTarget uses your cost. |
| Today’s Change and Gain/Loss | MeaningThe move since yesterday’s close, and your total gain or loss against cost. |
- Sorting. Select the Shares, Market Value, Weight or Today's Change heading to sort. Select it again to reverse, and a third time to clear.
- Dividend yield. A badge appears on tickers that have dividends recorded.
- Company logos. ASX holdings show a logo where one is available, with initials as the fallback.
- Sector tab. A pie chart of your sector mix. Holdings with no sector, such as most ETFs, show as Other.
- Earnings. Upcoming earnings dates for your holdings, with a range when the date is not confirmed.
FinTarget saves one value snapshot per portfolio each day you refresh prices. A snapshot is saved only when every holding in that portfolio has a live price, so a failed refresh cannot overwrite a good day. Analytics uses these snapshots for net worth over time.
Stock splits and renames
- Record a split with a ratio, such as 1:2, and a date. FinTarget previews the new share count and average cost before it saves.
- When NSE renames a ticker, FinTarget updates your holdings, trades and dividends for you and sends a notification. A portfolio that already holds the new ticker is left unchanged.
Share a portfolio
Choose Share, then Create shareable link. Anyone with the link can view the portfolio in read-only mode without an account. The page shows market value, gain or loss, one-month and year-to-date change, the holdings table and a value-over-time chart. Select Copy link to share it.
The link also shows your portfolio's daily value history, so share it only with people you trust. Revoke the link from the same dialog to stop sharing.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Live Price shows a dash | Likely fixNo price is available for that symbol. Check the ticker and the exchange, since a delisted or renamed stock has none. |
| An import row is marked invalid | Likely fixThe ticker returned no live price. Fix the ticker or the portfolio’s exchange and import again. |
| Values look slightly old | Likely fixChoose Refresh Prices. Quotes are cached for about a minute. |
