AI (MCP)

MCP tools reference

An AI app connected to FinTarget can use 32 tools. 24 of them only read your data. The other 8 add or undo records, and only work if you ticked Also let this app add records when you connected the app. You never call them yourself: ask in plain English and the app picks the tools it needs.

No tool can edit or delete the records you entered yourself. Every tool under Adding records except List Categories needs the write permission. To connect an app, see Connect an AI app.

Adding records

  • Permission first. An app that was connected read-only is told so and asked to have you reconnect it with the box ticked. Settings, then Security, then Connected apps shows which apps can add records.
  • No guessing. The category or income type must be one you already have, and the app is told to confirm amounts, dates and categories with you before it adds anything.
  • What is covered. Expenses, income, budgets, fixed deposits, super balances and gift card spends. Gift card payments and split bills on an expense, and recurring schedules, are not covered yet, so add those in FinTarget.
  • New records only. A budget or a super month that already exists cannot be changed this way. The app is told to ask you to edit it in FinTarget.
  • Undo and corrections. Undo removes only what an app added, and Update Expense corrects only an expense an app added, both for 24 hours. Your own records cannot be reached.

How results work

  • Currencies stay separate. Every row carries its own currency, and totals are grouped by currency. Only Get Net Worth and Get Allocation convert, and only when you pass convert_to. They return the exchange rates they used and when they were fetched.
  • Use summaries for totals. The list tools total only the rows they return. For a total over a period, an app should use Get Cashflow Summary, Get Dividend Summary or Get Tax Year Summary, which cover every record.
  • Lists say when they are cut short. List tools return 100 rows by default and up to 500, and say how many matched and whether the list was truncated. Get Holdings returns the top 50 by value by default, up to 300, and its portfolio summaries always cover every holding.
  • Portfolios by name or id. Tools that filter by portfolio accept the portfolio's name, such as ASX, or its id from List Portfolios. Passing both is an error.
  • Live data is fetched on request. Prices, exchange rates, sectors and event dates are fetched live. A missing price comes back as null and is valued at cost. Sector and event lookups work one symbol at a time within a time limit, so the result reports how much it covered. Sectors are saved once found, so repeating Get Allocation fills in the rest.

Prompts

FinTarget also offers three ready-made prompts. Apps that support prompts, such as Claude, list them so you can start a review with one click.

PromptWhat it asks the app to do
Monthly ReviewWhat it asks the app to doReview income, spending, savings rate, budgets and anything needing attention for a month. You can give a month, and it defaults to the last full month.
Financial Year CheckWhat it asks the app to doSummarise a financial year: income, dividends with franking credits, share sale proceeds and super contributions. You can give the year the financial year ends in.
Portfolio CheckupWhat it asks the app to doCheck your portfolios: value, allocation, concentration, biggest movers, upcoming dates and alerts.

Try it

  • “Compare my spending in October with September and tell me what changed most.”
  • “Which sectors make up most of my INR portfolios?”
  • “What did I receive in dividends last financial year, including franking credits?”
  • “What are my recurring payments, and what do they add up to each month?”
